Troy Passey
date of broadcast: September 2, 2009

Troy Passey, youngest of three children, was raised on a hay and dairy farm in Paris, Idaho, a fourth-generation native. He attended Utah State University as an English major with an art history minor. In 1995, he attended Boise State University, where he earned an M.F.A.

In 2000 and 2007, Passey had work accepted into the prestigious Idaho Triennial Exhibition at the Boise Art Museum. In 2000, his art was selected for a “fresh Visions” solo exhibition, again at the Boise Art Museum. Since then, he has had work in four group shows, including a recent one, “The Container Show” in Ketchum (July-August 2009). Represented by the Stewart Gallery in Boise, he has also had three one-person shows at the Ogle Gallery in Portland. He is, as well, a three-time recipient of QuickFunds grants from the Idaho Commission on the Arts and a 2009 ICA Visual Art Fellowship recipient.

For the most part, Passey paints on Bristol board vellum or Lennox 100drawing paper. He favors a Pilot V5 pen for inscription, and his palette ranges from black to white to silver. His compositions—decidedly more abstract than representational— precede the text, which is repetitive and drawn from books, songs, films, or conversations overheard. “You don’t really expect someone to read a piece,” he says, “and I prefer that my work doesn’t hit the viewer over the head with the text. After all,” he explains, “I’m trying to get the viewer to see.”
