PURPOSE
This literature program is a collaborative effort among twelve western states
to bring writers into communities where residents may be underexposed to
creative writing because of geographical or economic circumstances. Writers of
fiction, nonfiction, and poetry give readings and hold writing workshops. They
present their own work to audiences in "their own country." They may encourage
and assist the thread of a story by a local writer or reader; they may help a
child shape his or her first poem. Primarily, however, they are interested in
developing and expanding new audiences for literature.
The enthusiasm and interests of writers and community sponsors working together determine the range of a TumbleWords program. Writers who participate in the program are among the better in Idaho.
ELIGIBILITY
The TumbleWords program is tailored to communities willing to match, in part,
funding from the Western States Arts
Federation, the Commission, and other sources.

FUNDING
TumbleWords requires a 1:1 match from the organization or community sponsoring
the reading and residency. The match may be in-kind, consisting of publicity,
housing, staff time, and so on.
HOW TO APPLY
Organizations wishing to participate in the program, or individuals who want to
initiate a program in a community, should communicate with the Literature
Director. Upon agreement, a contract is implemented that defines the terms.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
Sites will be selected where there is:
a qualified 501(c) 3 organization or unit of local or tribal government to
administer the funds.
an interest within the community in increasing access to literature.
available volunteers or staff with the time necessary for the program.
acceptable facility available.
DEADLINE
Applications are accepted throughout the year. Final reports must be submitted
within 60 days after completion of the project, but no later than August 31, whichever

in the applicant forfeiting the 10% final payment and will affect future funding.
