Artist and photographer My current work pivots off formal interests I had in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, I made mosaics of tightly cropped images to reconstruct larger views. The themes were generally explorations of the innate characteristics of the camera, lens and photo-chemical materials. Gradually I changed from using photographic prints to making large acrylic paintings comprised of multiple canvasses. References to the perceptual curiosities of photographic systems gave way to an interest in personal metaphor. Recently I came back to using photographs, this time working with digital techniques. I photograph urban and rural landscape subjects and combine those images with appropriated pictures from the public domain that relate to my personal history. I use my inventory of family photographs as well. From this emerge narratives of the mythological West, the search for identity, and the sublime. contact ![]() Stumpteeth ![]() Upstream, Downstream ![]() It's Elementary www.petegrady.com.
