Valley View Elementary
Imagine the Possibilities! In the fall of 2006, professional dancer and Artist in Residence Jo Miller spent four days working with the students, teachers and parents of Valley View Elementary. Infusing Social Studies, Language Arts, Physical Education, and Fine Arts, second graders studied the concept of community in a project titled, Our County, With Pride. Students interviewed community residents, painted highlights of local scenes in watercolor, read a story about group strength and synthesized the entire study unit into a dance performance choreographed by Miller. Over fifty second graders focused on creating, performing and responding through creative movement over a four-day period. As part of the performance, students took on the roles of important people in their lives, such as the principal of the school, sharing their appreciation of pivotal community leaders through dance. “The students created physical representations of the ideas they generated through the study unit,” wrote Artist in Residence Jo Miller. Creative movement became the expressive element of the project, offering students a way to kinesthetically comprehend the lessons of community and share what they learned with the entire student body.
“This was one of the best projects our school has done, we can’t wait for another Artist in Residence!” said Joan Myers. top |
