Describe a transformation process that has occurred in your own practice as an artist or in a past residency as a teaching artist.
In my early training at the undergraduate level, by beginning to explore Modern Dance as a creative source of discipline & joy, I felt I had discovered a profound sense of awareness through dance. This was life changing for me.

When have you been able to recognize learning taking place?
It shows in a student's bearing, their eyes and their expression, long before they talk about it. This is why we teach.

What excites your imagination and in turn how does your work excite imagination for your audience?
By working with the individual traits of each dancer - their movement qualities, styles and abilities - I hope to engage an audience in an imaginative view through dance.

What characteristics mark a successful collaboration for you?
Collaboration is successful to me when I feel I have shared material and energy from another source. This leads to a deeper understanding of my own work and approach. The characteristics of success are ongoing and felt in later work.

How do you foster creativity, both in your work and as a teaching artist?
I foster creativity by providing an environment that leads to problem solving, exploration and self-awareness.

Three key understandings of this discipline are:
  1. Dance, as a fine art, has evolved from primitive history, ritual, folk tradition and the need to express.
  2. Dance is a physical discipline as well as a means of discovery and creativity.
  3. Dance is a means of expression and communication.
Outcomes of the three understandings are:
  1. Creative output – choreographic expression
  2. Training and development of techniques such as ballet or modern dance
  3. Performance
Three Idaho Humanities Contest Standards that correlate with each of the core concepts identified above:
  1. Learning historical and cultural aspects of dance.
  2. Exploring dance as a means of expression.
  3. Learning to physically move to convey action or experience.

Subject areas outside of the fine arts that relate to potential residency work- i.e. possible connections to the curriculum might include:
Almost any subject can relate to the creative arts- i.e., writing is a means of expression. These ideas can be translated through movement and the process of choreography. Imagery is a source of ideas. References:
