What is a Teaching Artist?

Nationally recognized actor, teaching artist and author Eric Booth www.artspoweredschools.idaho.gov/summer/si2006_schedule.html has developed the following definition of the teaching artist: “A teaching artist (artist-educator) is a practicing professional artist with the complementary skills and sensibilities of an educator, who engages people in learning experiences in, through, and about the arts.”

Idaho Commission on the Arts’ Artists in Residence are exemplary Teaching Artists who look forward to collaborating with you to create a residency that excites the imagination of your entire learning community.

How to Use the Directory of Teaching Artists

Any Idaho school or non-profit organization interested in bringing the arts and Teaching Artists into their school can use the Directory of Teaching Artists. This listing of 18 Idaho Teaching Artists is a tool with which to craft exceptional experiences between people.

Throughout the Directory of Teaching Artists you will find ideas and insights from program participants for building unique projects with Teaching Artists - projects that will bring new perceptions and inspirations to children and adults in your community.

Listings show the Teaching Artists’ discipline, areas of interest, availability to work with specific populations, and more. Once your organization has defined its reasons for seeking a teaching artist, you can:
  • Browse through the Directory of Teaching Artists to identify potential Teaching Artists that might meet your needs
  • Contact the teaching artist(s) directly to discuss your project and explore the possibilities with one or several Teaching Artists
  • Explain that you are thinking about a residency, and ask for input.
  • Be ready to talk about desired outcomes of your organization or school
  • Call references.
  • Once you have made your choice, establish a timeline and communication plan to develop an enriching experience for your participants with the teaching artist you have selected.
  • Please let all artists that you spoke with know that you have made a decision on which artist you will work with for the current project.
Teaching Artists on the Montana, Nevada, Wyoming, Washington and Utah rosters can also be used for Idaho Arts Education Program grant applications, and will be considered pre-approved for inclusion on ICA grant applications.
